Board of Regents Revises Proposed Policy in Response to Concerns from Faculty and Students

The Capital Dispatch reported on the BOR’s revised approach to “controversial subjects” at Iowa’s public universities. A first proposal introduced in June aimed to eliminate “DEI” and “CRT” - defined to include concepts such “systemic oppression” and “social justice” - from all required courses, a move that prompted vocal opposition from faculty and students.

Under the revised policy, faculty may instruct on “controversial topics” that fall within the course’s subject, provided that they are taught in a way that reflects a range of scholarly views and “fosters critical thinking and avoids indoctrination of one perspective.”
