What we do

The University of Iowa Chapter of the America Association of University Professors (AAUP) works to further the Association's mission:

• “to advance academic freedom and shared governance

• to promote the economic security of [...] all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; and

• to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good.”

The Chapter disseminates information on higher education principles and practices and conveys the policies and views of the Association to administrators, governing boards, local and state legislative bodies, and the general public.

Specifically, the Chapter:

• Educates faculty about the principles of academic freedom and shared governance and their rights under University policies and state and federal law;

• Provides free, confidential advice through Committee A for faculty members who encounter problems with academic freedom, tenure, promotion, or due process;

• Raises awareness about issues of current concern and produces position papers on topics of interest to faculty; and

• Works closely with the Faculty Senate in drafting changes to official University documents, revising current policies, and creating updates to the Operations Manual.
